Set amongst the intrigue and bloodshed of the royalist rebellion in northwestern France during the revolution, Bisclavret chronicles the rise of Isabelle, a handmaid in the household of a powerful Marquis. She accompanies the family she serves as they flee north from the encroaching revolutionaries to seek shelter with a distant and mysterious relative, the Baron de Bisclavret. But all is not what it seems in the dark and foreboding forest that presses in around the château, and against her will, Isabelle finds herself swept up in a world of intrigue and magic.

Based in part upon the twelfth century poem by Marie de France, and filled with real historical figures, Bisclavret blends legend and history, bathing the War in the Vendée in an eerie, preternatural light.

  1. OMG. I just wanted to keep reading Scandal, and then I read this.
    Wow, French Revolution is one of my favorite parts of History, I was obsessed with it in High School.
    Plus, my name-day is July, 14th… I’ve always seen it as a sign I was destined to love it.


  2. I love this! Bisclavret was my favorite lai, I’ve always wanted to read a retelling of it.
