I came across this book randomly, read the blurb, the glowing reviews and thought “Why the hell not.” I will NEVER be spontaneous AGAIN.
By page ten I should have known. I should have stopped. I read farther than I should have. Farther than I’m willing to admit to. For the purposes of this review, let’s just focus on the first chapter, shall we?
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Caitlin, our heroic MC and vampire tracking whiz, who has zero superhuman strength, zero metaphysical abilities (other than being able to ‘see’ preternaturals) and who is currently staking out (pun intended) a 300 year old vampire. Her backup isn’t in place but Caitlin thinks her target (Kane) is about to make a great escape so she ignores her supervisor’s demands to stay in place and dashes after said vamp into a crowded club. Alone. Did I mention she’s armed with only a tranq gun? But don’t worry, she quote “knows what she’s doing”.
So she finds Kane. Well, actually Kane finds her, disarms her within a fraction of a second (shocking, I know) and turns her own gun against her. How embarrassing. The other vampire hunters will never look at her the same again. Sadface.
At this point she assumes her backup can’t be far behind so she starts to read him his rights. He then proceeds to mock her (really, who can blame him) and then tells her she’s lucky she serves a purpose. The insinuation here being that if she didn’t, he’d kill her. He touches her neck while whispering these sweet, sweet words so of course she gets turned on.
You can’t really blame her can you? He’s clearly some sort of fanged-charmer. Just read some of the other endearing sentences that come out of his mouth during this scene:
“A little girl doing a man’s job, bound to end in tears.”
“Someone have an equal opportunities box to check, did they? Or was someone promised the prising open of those slender thighs?”
He then proceeds to shove her against a wall, feel her up without her consent and fantasize about ‘breaking’ her.
I’m sorry but did I miss something? Is this behavior supposed to be ‘Hawt’? Are we at any point supposed to lust after this chauvinistic bastard???
